Course: Math 790 Linear Algebra II
Time and Place: MWF 1:00 - 1:50pm, Wescoe Hall 4051
Description: In this course we will study linear algebra in an abstract setting. Topics to be covered include vector spaces, dual spaces, inner product spaces (including orthonormal bases via Gram-Schmidt), linear transformations, eigenvalues, matrices (including the trace and the determinant), linear operators on inner product spaces, spectral theorems, and canonical forms. All course material will appear on both our course webpage and our Canvas page.
Texts: We will not be following closely any particular text. However, the material covered in this course appears in almost every graduate linear algebra course. The following freely available text will serve as a useful eference and occasional source of homework problems: Linear Algebra Done Wrong (2017 edition), by Sergei Treil. Two other texts that serve as good supplementary references are: (a) The beautiful book Linear Algebra Done Right, by Sheldon Axler and (b) Advanced Linear Algebra, by Bruce Cooperstein.

Homework Assignments: Homework will be assigned daily, but is not to be turned in. You are encouraged to work together - safely - on homework problems, since it is often more fun to solve problems together. However, to bolster your proof writing skills, I recommend that you write up the solutions on your own. Learning mathematics is like learning a language, and the latter cannot be done without significant daily practice. The homework problems will give you plenty of opportunity to practice. You are responsible for all material covered in the homework assignments, especially since the take home exams have been known to include homework problems. Take Home Exams: There will be three take-home exams. The tentative dates for these exams are September 26, October 24, December 5, though these dates are subject to change as the semester progresses. NO collaboration will be allowed on these exams. Please note that each exam will be handed out on a Monday and will be due Monday of the following week.

Final Exam: The final exam will be held in our classroom on Friday December 16, from 10:30am to 1:00pm.
Course grading: Three take home exams (100 points each) and the final exam (200 points). Total: 500 points.
